It is almost impossible to have fun when we are bottled up with repressed emotions, worried sick about someone, saturated with guilt and despair, rigidly controlling ourselves or someone else, or worried about what other people are thinking about us. However, most people aren't thinking about us; they're worried about themselves and what we think of them.

We don't have to punish ourselves by feeling guilty to prove to God or anyone else how much we care.7 We need to forgive ourselves. Take the Fourth and Fifth Steps (see the chapter on working a Twelve Step program); talk to a clergy person; talk to God; make amends; and then be done with it.

Jesus Christ graced earth's guilty sod to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice and fulfill every requirement of the Law once and for all. He shed His precious blood on an altar constructed of two pieces of wood and fashioned into a cross. The fire of holy judgment met with the blood of the spotless Lamb, and our guilt was purged and our sins atoned. Glory to His name! We need no further act of atonement, but we are desperate for the continuing work of sanctification.

While the resurrection promises us a new and perfect life in the future, God loves us too much to leave us alone to contend with the pain, guilt and loneliness of our present life.

The irony of all this is that God of perfect justice is both the one for whom we long and the one whom we dread. We long for someone to set things right, to punish those who terrorize, molest, kills and enslave the innocent... we want a judge with total power and piercing commitment to righteousness. But when his eyes turn on us, we realize that we too, are guilty. We, too, deserve his judgement.
